The focus of our May 2019 trip to Tibet was to bring together some of the best men’s and women’s basketball players from across the Tibetan Plateau in the first-ever Tibetan All-Star Camp. Most players in Tibet have had little coaching, with limited or no access to basketball equipment or training techniques from the U.S. Tibetan women and girls, in particular, haven’t even had the opportunity to participate in sports until very recently.
With the funds raised from our 3-on-3 March Madness Tournament and the help of groundwork and organization by Coach Bill Johnson, we were able to invite 15 men and 12 women players to the All-Star Camp. The players traveled from all around the Tibetan Plateau to meet in the small village of Ritoma and train with our staff of four coaches from the U.S. and a women’s coach from Nepal. An incredible event that will have a lasting impact in the area, the camp included accommodations and food for all the players in addition to two full days of on-court drills and scrimmages. A number of the participants plan to pass on the new drills and skills they developed at the All-Star Camp to youth players in their respective villages and cities.
